Mentoring for pupils

Talking brings people together.

It does not matter if you're still shaking in your boots at the mere thought of writing or if you're already dreaming about your future student life: Mentoring can be a very enriching experience.

Students pass on the experiences they made in their last school year, and later in university writing academic papers and living the everyday study life to pupils, supporting them in exactly those areas that are important to them! The student mentors are not only rewarded with ECTS credit points, but also gain additional skills useful for their completion of studies and ventures into the job market.

The programme is aimed at all University of Graz and TU Graz students as well as all Styrian grammar school & vocational school pupils (7th or 4th grade).

Why should I participate in the mentoring programme?

  • Learn tips & tricks from students who already have experience writing academic papers
  • Gain insights into current research projects
  • Get support in finding appropriate source literature
  • Receive feedback on your writing at a peer level
  • Learn time management techniques ‒ the last year of school is already stressful enough!
  • Gain insight into university life and degree programmes
  • Attend lectures together

Who is the programme aimed at?

  • The mentoring programme is aimed at all Styrian grammar school & vocational school pupils as well as higher-semester students at the Graz University of Technology and the University of Graz.
  • The pupils should currently be in either 7th grade (grammar school) or 4th grade (vocational school) in Styria.

How long does the programme last?

  • The programme always starts in February and continues until the end of January of the following year.

When does mentoring begin and end?

  • December: application deadline (December 20, 2023)
  • End of January: announcement of acceptance into the programme & information about mentor
  • February: kick-off event (February 16, 2024) and start of mentoring
  • Following January: end of mentoring

Why should I participate in a mentoring programme?

  • Acquisition of soft skills
  • Valuable additional training, which will come in handy not least when you are writing your own academic papers for your degree programme
  • Confirmation of participation
  • 2 ECTS credit points per semester, which can be recognised as a free elective course or internship for relevant work experience (teacher training programme) in your curriculum

Who is the programme aimed at?

  • The mentoring programme is open to all students at the University of Graz and the Graz University of Technology from the 4th semester on, who already have experience in writing papers themselves.
  • Ideally, students also already have experience with mentoring/supervision.
  • In addition, they also have writing, texting and research skills or basic experience in writing academic texts (e.g., you have already written seminar papers).
  • Furthermore, students must not have participated in the mentoring programme previously (because a student can only participate in the programme once).

How long does the programme last?

  • The programme always starts in February and continues until the end of January of the following year.
