Admission procedure to the Doctoral Programme in Antiquity and Modernity

In order to be admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Antiquity and Modernity in an European Context, you must first go through a qualitative admission procedure via a commission. On this page we have summarized for you which steps have to be followed.

Application deadline for winter semester 2025/26: July 7th until September 5th, 2025

Building old and new

  • Current photo
  • Passport or Identity card
  • Proof of completed studies (foreign documents must be properly certified - information on certification) + certified translation (except: documents in German and English)
  • List of attended courses of the previous studies/research or study focus (proof of success, transcript, diploma supplement)
  • Language certificate (information for international applicants, see also Curriculum 23W)
  • Exposé of the dissertation project of approx. 5 pages including the description of the underlying theories and methods
  • Academic curriculum vitae
  • Application for admission to the doctoral school and supervision agreement
  • Letter of motivation

Do you have an active UGO student account?

  • Upload the application documents in UNIGRAZonline via the app "My applications".

You do not have an UGO student account?

  • Register for a basic user account.
  • After registration you will receive an email with an activation link for your account.
  • Log in to UNIGRAZonline on the homepage via "Applicants" with your generated user name (or e-mail address) and created password.
  • Upload the application documents via the app "My applications".

The selection committee consists of five persons

  • the responsible (vice-)dean of studies
  • the head of the doctoral school
  • the chairperson of the curriculum commission
  • another member of the curriculum commission (university professor or junior faculty)
  • the proposed first supervisor

The selection committee uses the criteria to check whether the applicant has a suitable previous study program for the intended doctoral programme and whether the qualitative admission requirements are met.

  • You will receive the notification of admission by email.
  • Academic Affairs will inform you about the further procedure regarding enrollment.
  • After enrollment you will get access to UNIGRAZonline and you can register for courses.

Application deadline for winter semester 2025/26: July 7th until September 5th, 2025

  • The selection committee needs about 6 weeks to decide about the admission.
  • The application deadline for courses is mid-September or mid-February.
  • The courses start at the beginning of October or at the beginning of March.

  • Curriculum 23W for the interdisciplinary doctoral program "Antiquity and Modernity in an European Context"
  • Founding declaration for the interdisciplinary doctoral school "Antiquity and Modernity in an European Context"
  • Regulation of the Rectorate on admission to studies

After addmission

The supervision meetings between the supervisors and the doctoral student must be documented with a form.
