Planning a third-party funded project? The faculty supports you!
Preparing and submitting larger research proposals (e.g. to FWF, FWF Joint Projects, EU, Thyssen) is time-consuming. Use the possibility of financial support to apply for your externally funded project (research projects with a funding volume of up to approx. EUR 500,000, no educational programs).
The Faculty of Humanities will contribute substantially to the costs if the following criteria are met:
- The project proposal is being submitted for the first time.
- The project is intended to fund several research positions.
- The project proposal is to be ready for submission in 2025.
- The project proposal is supported by the researcher´s department/centre (informal e-mail from the head of department/center).
What to submit?
To be submitted (in German or English; max. 10 A4 pages in total):
A) Project description (max. 2,000 words):
- State of the art of relevant international research (including own preliminary work, if applicable) and relation of the project to this context
- Clearly defined aims and hypothesis/hypotheses or research question(s) of the project
- Description of the project’s anticipated level of originality or scientific/scholarly innovation
- Methods
- Rough time and budget plan for the planned project (please already consider §109 UG when planning the involved researchers!!)
- (planned) cooperation partners and associated research partners (if applicable; national and/or international, subject of the intended cooperation(s) or the planned contribution)
B) Data of the funding call (funding organisation, program track, deadlines, ....)
C) Name of the core topic of the Faculty of Humanities and/or the research network, and the field of excellence of the University of Graz to which the project is assigned
D) Research achievements of the principal investigator (list of no more than ten of the most important published or accepted academic publications (journal articles, monographs, edited volumes, contributions to edited volumes, proceedings, etc.; and list of no more than ten of the most important research achievements apart from academic publications, including achievements such as freely accessible research data including software and codes, awards, contributions to conferences, keynote lectures, significant research projects, …; see ‘Application Guidelines Principal Investigator Projects’ 2.2.3 Project description and annexes, effective as of July 1, 2023, version 4)
The desired support is to be submitted in a separate document or via email at the time of submission.
Which costs can (not) be applied for?
In particular, costs for personnel (temporary increases in part-time employment for max. 6 months, contract for work), material resources (temporary license costs, costs for test subjects, etc.) and/or a teaching reduction for the summer semester 2025 (max. 4 semester hours) can be applied for.
The following costs cannot be applied for: Travel costs or expenses for guests, publications, homepages, etc.
Funding will start on 1 January 2025 at the earliest.
Is a teaching reduction desired?
If a reduction in teaching is desired (up to a maximum of 4 semester hours is possible), the chairperson of the responsible Curricular Committee must be consulted before the application is submitted. The submission of the necessary teaching change by the Curricular Committee and the decision on approval/rejection by the Dean of Studies takes place after any approval of the funding.
What is the submission deadline?
Applications can be submitted by e-mail (gewi.dekan(at)uni-graz.at) until September 25, 2024.
What is the procedure for reviewing applications?
Applications are reviewed by members of the Faculty of Humanities according to a standardized procedure. The final decision regarding the awards of funding lies with the Deans of the Faculty and will be communicated by the end of October at the latest.
What is the requirement for reviewing an application?
A prerequisite of reviewing of the application is that the applicant or the researcher designated to lead the project has filled in his/her profile in the research portal of the University of Graz and that the research data are up-to-date.
