Research profile and guiding principles
Research in the humanities at the University of Graz drives on the richness of a wide range of subjects. The "spirit" of the humanities is plural, heterogeneous and culturally manifest at all times. The objects of our research include everyday languages and historical testimonies as well as arguments, texts, (art) objects and musical works of all kinds, institutions, social formations and practices. Our methodological approach is correspondingly diverse. It includes image and conceptual analyses, semantic investigations, hermeneutic-interpretative procedures, field studies, date research and source criticism, genealogies and a variety of data collection methods.
At the Faculty of Humanities in Graz, deepening one's subject knowledge goes hand in hand with an inter/transdisciplinary approach. Crossing borders is at the centre of our focus. Structure meets topicality, and historical depth and tradition are combined with analysis and innovation.
Core topics of the Faculty of Humanities
Modern societies face multiple challenges and crises. Migration and multilingualism transform political, economic and social structures and systems as well as individual and cultural identities.
The Mediterranean is a central place for our European identity. It is a place where the most important problems and questions of the present are manifested, and which can trigger the liveliest associations and discourses.
Hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, tasting – both human and non-human animals encounter the world through perception. Meaningful self-comportment, capable of responding to the challenges of one’s environment, would be impossible without appropriately specialized perceptual capacities.
