Translation in Post-Exile: People, Texts, Entanglements 1945–60 (Post-Exil:Trans)

Post-Exil:Trans examines how experiences of exile shaped translational practices during the post-war period and investigates the influence of exiled translators on the transformation of German-speaking societies after the war. Building on findings from the Exil:Trans research project, this initiative seeks to reconstruct the translation experiences of scholars, editors, writers, and other cultural agents between 1945 and 1960. It analyzes the cultural and societal transformations related and emerging from these experiences.

Questions key to this project are: How did experiences of exile shape translational practices in literature, academia, and broader society? What role did exiled translators play in shaping the post-war cultural landscape in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland? To what extent did the translation practices of exiled individuals contribute to social transformation, the creation of new cultural repertoires, and the establishment of intellectual movements, but also academic and other institutions in the post-war era?

Taking a transcultural perspective, the project aims to shed light on the intricate entanglements of exile, translation, and social change in the post-war period, offering a richer understanding of their lasting impact on cultural and social development.
