Celtic Divine Names in Latin Inscriptions in the Southern Region of the Germania Superior and in the Province of Raetia. Religious Phenomena in a Cultural Contact Zone
This project is the third and final continuation of two successful previous studies on Celtic divine names in Roman inscriptions from the Germanic provinces. The FWF project P 29274-G25 focused on the province of Germania Inferior, while project P 34422 G investigated the military zone in northern Germania Superior. The project is closely linked to the international research network F.E.R.C.AN., which aims to compile and analyse all Celtic divine names found in Roman inscriptions.
This project will build upon the findings of the previous studies by shifting the research focus to parts of Upper Germania which not only were formerly Celtic settlement areas, but firstly, had fewer documented soldiers and groups originating from the right bank of the Rhine compared to Lower Germania and the military zone of Upper Germania, and secondly, exhibit migration-related cultural influences from inner Gaul.
The extension to the province of Raetia closes the geographical gap to Noricum, which is particularly relevant as Raetia served as a contact zone for religious and cultural influences from the neighbouring Germanic and Noric regions. Additionally, Raetia is characterized by a cultural division, with Celtic-influenzed areas in the Alps and Raetian-dominated regions in the high mountains.

This research will lead to significant advancements in the current state of knowledge by providing:
- an updated edition of all relevant inscription material, which will be made available online in the new digital format developed in project P 29274-G25,
- a comprehensive analysis of all Celtic-language divine names in the study area, a resource that has not existed and will serve as an essential foundation for future research, and
- a review, refinement and expansion of the results obtained from the study of the Celtic divine names in Germania Inferior and the military zone of Germania Superior.
Furthermore, the diverse ethnic composition of the population in the research area enables a comparative analysis of results across regions with:
a) a Celtic population and Roman military presence,
b) a Germanic and Raetian population with Roman military presence, and
c) a Raetian and Celtic population without a significant Roman military presence.
This comparison will help determine whether the findings across these different settlement contexts are similar or divergent.
