Submitting the Doctoral Thesis

Is your doctoral thesis almost completed? Are you already thinking about everything you will need to submit alongside it? Here, you will find all the information you need for submitting your doctoral thesis.

First things first: What does a doctoral thesis need to look like?

  • This is what the title page of your doctoral thesis should look like: sample title page.
  • Recommendation for the layout of university theses - ÖNorm
  • Please note: For data protection reasons, a sworn statement must not be included in the thesis!
 {f:if(condition: '', then: '©')}

Before submitting the thesis, all doctoral candidates must prepare a short abstract in both German and English (max. 4,000 characters incl. spaces each), as well as in the original language of the thesis, should this be neither German nor English.

  • Upload all abstracts and the final version of the thesis (in PDF/A format) in UNIGRAZonline via the app "My Theses".

  • Fill in all mandatory fields (see "Processing status" in the app).

  • The second evaluator for your thesis is entered by the person responsible at the dean's office after you have submitted your thesis. External second evaluators must be approved before submitting the thesis. Send an informal e-mail (including information about the external person) to the responsible Vice-/Dean of Studies and Cc to the Dean's Office.

  • Once both abstracts and the thesis are uploaded, click the "Submit Now” button. This automatically notifies your supervisor via e-mail that the abstracts are to be released.

  • If your supervisor is not an employee of the University of Graz, please inform the dean's office responsible immediately about the submission via e-mail.

If you need more help, you can find detailed instructions for submission here!

Your evaluators may additionally request a printout of your doctoral thesis. This printout must be handed in directly to your evaluators.

Once you have uploaded und submitted your thesis (in PDF/A format) in UNIGRAZonline, it will be subject to a plagiarism check. You will be notified via e-mail as soon as the check report has been sent to your evaluators.

If the publication of your thesis would compromise important legal or economic interests, you can request a temporary exclusion of use for your thesis for a maximum of five years. During this period, your thesis will not be publicly available. If this applies to you, fill out an application for temporary exclusion of use of your doctoral thesis and send it via e-mail to the dean's office responsible immediately after submitting the thesis in UNIGRAZonline.

Between submission of the thesis and the exam: at least 4 weeks
The time between the submission of a thesis and the final degree examination and/or completion of studies must be no shorter than four weeks. Please note that evaluators have up to four months to compile their expert reports.

Between expert report and examination: at least 2 weeks
If the degree programme is completed with a final degree examination, this examination can be taken two weeks at the earliest after the expert reports have been submitted to the dean's office.

How long can the evaluation of the thesis take?
According to the Excerpt of Statutes: Provisions under Study Law, the evaluators must assess the thesis within four months of its submission.
