Admission procedure for the doctoral programme in Philosophy

In order to be admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Philosophy, you must first go through a qualitative admission procedure via a committee. On this page we have summarized for you which steps have to be followed.

Application deadline for winter semester 2025/26: July 7th until September 5th, 2025

  • Current photo
  • Passport or Identity card
  • Proof of completed studies:
    - foreign documents must be properly certified and translated (exception for translation: German and English documents)
    - information on certification
  • List of attended courses of the previous studies/research or study focus (proof of success, transcript, diploma supplement)
  • Language certificate (information for international applicants, see also Curriculum 24W)
  • Exposé of the dissertation project of approx. 2-3 pages including a description of the underlying theories and methods
  • Academic curriculum vitae
  • Application for admission to the doctoral school and supervision agreement
  • Letter of motivation

Useful:

  • Possible supervisor(s) (Academic staff of the Faculty of Humanities with a teaching qualification)
  • Persons who have completed their habilitation at the Faculty of Humanities, as well as emeritus and retired
  • Possible subjects for the Doctoral programme in Philosophy

Do you have an active UGO student account?

  • Upload the application documents to UNIGRAZonline via the app "My applications".

You do not have a UGO student account?

  • Register for a basic user account.
  • After registration you will receive an email with an activation link for your account.
  • Log in to UNIGRAZonline on the homepage via "Applicants" with your generated user name (or email address) and created password.
  • Upload the application documents via the app "My applications".

The selection committee consists of four persons:

  • the chairperson of the curriculum committee
  • two closely related members of the doctoral school
  • the proposed first supervisor

The selection committee uses the criteria to check whether the applicant has a suitable previous study progarmme for the intended doctoral pogramme and whether the qualitative requirements are met.

  • You will receive the notification of admission by email.
  • Academic Affairs will inform you about the further procedure regarding enrollment .
  • After enrolment you will get access to UNIGRAZonline and you can register for courses.

Application deadline for the winter semester 2025: July 7th until September 5th, 2025

  • The selection committee must decide on admission within 8 weeks.
  • The application deadline for courses is mid-September or mid-February.
  • The courses start at the beginning of October or the beginning of March.

  • Curriculum 24W for the doctoral programme in Philosophy
  • Founding declaration for the Doctoral School of Research in Humanities
  • Regulation of the Rectorate on admission to studies

After addmission

The supervision meetings between the supervisors and the doctoral student must be documented with a form.
