Between Modality and Tense - Studies on the Uses of Modal Verbs and Preteritopresentia in Old High German
This dissertation project seeks to investigate modal and preterit-present verbs in Old High German. Its main aim is to shed light on the different uses of the verbs in question, and to develop a typology of modal verb usages. As a next step, morpho-syntactic, lexical, and semantic properties of the different usages are to be analyzed. This analysis will be serving as basis for evaluating which properties can be considered as indicators or counter-indicators for the various usages. Drawing on this evaluation the modal verb tokens will be re-evaluated and possibly reassigned in accordance with their uses, ensuring that the final typology and classification of tokens are intersubjectively verifiable.
