Announcing the subject of the master’s thesis
In principle, you have to send written notification of the subject and supervisor of your master’s thesis to the dean of studies at the dean’s office of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities using this form (pdf), before you start writing.

Changing the subject of the master’s thesis
You can change the subject of your thesis with the consent of your supervisor, but you must announce the change by again submitting an application form (pdf) to the dean's office of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
 
Changing the supervisor of the master’s thesis
A change of supervisor is admissible until the master’s thesis is submitted, but must be announced to the dean's office of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities by again submitting an application form (pdf) (including the confirmation notice on the agreement of the previous supervisor).

Submitting the paper - modified process

In view of the current situation, the submission of theses is amended as follows until further notice:

Step 1: Electronic submission the the thesis

Remains as described on the homepage, see below. Please also note the formal requirements (cover sheet, etc.)

Step 2: Release of the electronic submission by the supervisor

Step 3: Submit the completed form „Submission of the Master´s Thesis“ by mil to gewi.anerkennung(at)uni-graz.at

Your uploaded thesis (PDF/A) submitted in UNIGRAZonline will be subjected to a plagiarism check after submission of the form.

Step 4: Delivery of the printed work as soon as it is possible again.

The printed papers for the UB and the supervisors*) have to be handed in later as soon as the dean's office is open again. You will receive the diploma after handing in the printed papers, provided that the final examination has already been taken.

*) Please clarify whether the supervisors would like a printed copy. If not, it is sufficient to hand in a copy.

The following procedure has been changed until cancelled - see above!

A TWO-STEP PROCESS

UPLOADING THE THESIS & ABSTRACTS

Abstract
According to a decision of the deans of studies, all students are obliged to prepare a short abstract in both German and English, as well as in the original language of the thesis should this be neither German nor English, before submitting the thesis.
You are required to upload these short summaries (each with a maximum of 2000 characters including spaces for online submission) on UNIGRAZonline via your business card under “Theses".
All required fields (see "formal requirements not met") must be completed.

Thesis
You are also required to upload the final full version of your master’s thesis. Once both abstracts and the thesis are uploaded, click the "Submit Now” button. This will automatically notify your supervisor via e-mail that the abstracts are to be released. Detailed instructions for upload (only in german).

Your uploaded und submitted thesis (PDF/A) in UNIGRAZonline will be subject to a plagiarism check after the submission of your hard-cover print version to the dean's office.

WHERE?

WHAT?

  • the form for submission of the master’s thesis (pdf)
  • 2 copies (3 copies for Joint Degree "Jewish Studies" and "English and American Studies” students) of the master’s thesis
  • 2 abstracts in German (without exception a maximum of 2000 characters, not including name of author and title of thesis)
  • 2 abstracts in English (without exception a maximum of 2000 characters, not including name of author and title of thesis)
  • possibly: application for temporary exclusion of the use of the master's thesis (pdf)

Attention: For reasons of data protection no honorary declaration may be included!

HOW?
The thesis must be submitted as a hardcover print version and all issue covers should be of the same colour. Pay special attention to the page numbers as they MUST match the electronic version. This is what the title page of the master’s thesis should look like:

Once you have submitted your thesis successfully and received a positive grade for it, you can register for the master's examination before a committee. You will find all information here!

FOLLOWING DEADLINES MUST BE ADHERED TO!

Between submission of the thesis and the exam: 4 weeks
The period between the submission of a scientific paper and the final degree examination must not be shorter than four weeks.

Between expert report and examination: 2 weeks
If the degree programme is completed with a final degree examination, this examination can be taken two weeks at the earliest after the expert report/s has/have been submitted to the examination office or the dean's office.
 
How long can the evaluation of the thesis take?
Acc. to section "Provisions under Study Law" § 27 (8), the supervisor must assess the thesis within two months upon its submission.

Your upcoming graduation requires you to provide information about your degree and study-related stays abroad for the purpose of statistics on education in Austria acc. to § 9 Education Documentation Act in the Federal Law Gazette I Nr. 12/2002 as amended. These statistics must be completed before you collect the documents related to your graduation. Duration: approx. 5 min.
